Free Tulip Appliqué Template (For Your Tulip Vest)
If you like the tulip details on this vest, this is how I created this fun, whimsical version!
I’ve put together a free appliqué template so you can recreate the same look using shapes that work alongside the Tulip Vest pattern.
This is a simple way to add a bit more detail to your vest without changing the construction. It fits into the making process just before you start sewing the pieces together, so it doesn’t complicate anything, just adds an extra step at the right point.
What this template includes
The download includes the shapes needed to create the stems and leaves for the tulip design.
The tulip flower heads are not included, as these come from the pocket pieces in the Tulip Vest pattern. If you’ve got the pattern, you already have everything you need.
How it works
The appliqué is added to your vest pieces before construction.
You’ll cut and position your stems and leaves, stitch those in place, then layer the tulip shapes on top. On the front, the tulips become functional pockets. On the back, they’re stitched directly onto the fabric.
It’s a straightforward technique, but it adds a completely different feel to the finished piece.

A small detail that changes the whole look
Using the pocket shapes as appliqué keeps everything consistent, but gives you a bit more flexibility in how your vest looks.
You can keep it subtle with similar tones, or make it more of a feature with contrast fabrics.

A quick note
This is an add-on to the Tulip Vest pattern, not a full pattern on its own. You’ll need the pattern to create the tulip shapes, as these come from the pocket pieces.

Where else you can use it
This appliqué works just as well on other projects too. You could use it on quilts, cushions or wall hangings. You might want to scale the stems and leaves slightly depending on your project, but the method stays the same.
If you make one
If you give this a go, I’d love to see what you make. You can email photos or tag @made.onmonday on Instagram.
